Murder of Crows Review

Blogger Robert Florence has a review up for Murder of Crows, and says: "It’s just as light as Fluxx, but it’s a better game. It’s also beautifully illustrated, and has a wonderful macabre theme ... A charming, lovely, dark little game." Read it now! (It's toward the bottom of the post.)

Ludopathes to Publish Ars Magica in French

Just a short announcement of breaking news: I'm pleased to announce that we have just finalized an agreement with the company Ludopathes to translate and publish Ars Magica 5th Edition in French.

ArM5 Guidelines Updated

The list of Supplemental Spell Guidelines for Ars Magica 5th Ed has been updated. Our thanks to Christopher Allen for maintaining it!

Gen Con 2012

John and I are just catching up from being at Gen Con last weekend. The Atlas Games booth was right up front by the central doors, with our sales guys from the Source doing a great job of helping customers and doing demos ... we featured Murder of Crows at our demo table, with terrific response!

We also got a first look at the Duck of Gloom plushie/dice bag from Steve Jackson Games, which includes a special Gloom character card as a promo. So cute!

And we got to see people's reaction to the Over the Edge 20th Anniversary Edition. Here's a video of designer Jonathan Tweet paging through it for the first time, with co-designer Robin Laws stopping by to look over his shoulder. Rob Heinsoo (lead designer of D&D 4th) makes a guest appearance as well ... he tells me that he did a review of Over the Edge back in the day, so he's not just a unsuspecting bystander after all!

Grand Tribunal UK Aftermath

Grand Tribunal is the Ars Magica convention held in the US and UK each year. This year's UK organizer Chris Jensen Romer sent us his write-up on the Cheltenham convention. Highlights were the Ars Magica freeform game (photo below), and the 1173 Battle of Fornham played with Ars Magica group combat rules, for which he's done a separate write-up. Congrats, CJ, on running such a successful convention again this year!

OTE20 Limited Hardcover Update

This month we have released the Over the Edge 20th Anniversary Limited Edition hardcover, in a limited run of only 400 copies (each with a numbered bookplate signed by Jonathan Tweet). Today our distributors around the USA should be receiving their copies (along with the latest reprint of Gloom), and that in turn means they should be appearing in local game stores later this week.

If you reserved a copy directly from us, we have already sent you an invoice via PayPal. Since we're past the Aug. 1 payment deadline set when I sent out the invoices, I've been shipping out the remaining copies of the book on a "first come, first served" basis. The number of copies that were reserved but are not yet paid for is greater than the number of copies we have left to sell. So if you still want a copy you reserved, I encourage you to pay at your earliest convenience. We'll continue to send them to folks who reserved them -- or to sell them to our regular game distributors as those orders come in. If you know that you won't be buying the book, you can also log in to PayPal to cancel the invoice. Whenever our stock of the book is gone, I will cancel the remaining unpaid PayPal invoices.

Cthulhu Gloom Podcast Review

The folks at Bonehand.com let us know they have a review of Cthulhu Gloom in the newly released Episode 91 of The BoneBat Show. It's at 31:44 and you can download it here, but note that parts of the rest of the podcast aren't suitable for younger audiences.

Grand Tribunal UK

Just a reminder that the Grand Tribunal UK convention is coming up soon, but there's still time to register! This Atlas-only game con will be held August 17 to August 19. If you're near Cheltenham, England be sure to stop by!

Gloom Status

It's been a very busy couple of weeks in the Atlas warehouse, and the work's not done yet, but I thought I should take a moment for some status updates.

We sold out of the Gloom original game last month, and the reprint arrived this week.  Many outlets had stocked up on the game when we were running low, so you may have been able to find it without too much trouble, but if that's not the case you should know that it will be arriving back in stores next week.  Specifically, our US distributors should be getting restocked with the game on Monday, and from there it's just a question of how long it takes to get product to your friendly local game store from their preferred distributor.  (If you're overseas there's even more unpredictability with freight forwarders, customs, etc.)

Sales of the rest of the Gloom line have been brisk as well.  Unhappy Homes and Unwelcome Guests are both out of stock in our warehouse (though some copies may be left at Warehouse 23 and other retailers), and Unfortunate Expeditions has been going fast.  We intend to reprint all three expansions in November, along with the brand new Unpleasant Dreams expansion deck for Cthulhu GloomCthulhu Gloom sales have also been strong, by the way, and we are well stocked on the game.

Cthulhu Gloom Review

Blogger Pookie just put up a review of Cthulhu Gloom. In it he says, "This is a well done reiteration. Where it improves on the original game is its theme, as thematically, Cthulhu Gloom is highly entertaining, especially if you know your Lovecraftian fiction. The game takes a slightly 'tentacle in cheek' approach to its source, one that is just humorous enough to entertain, but not so as to detract from awfulness that will be inflicted upon the Families. Cthulhu Gloom is a fiendishly luminescent design with a fussiness that complements the theme and the source. Mannered and maddening, Cthulhu Gloom -- The Game of Unspeakable Incidents and Squamous Consequences is satisfyingly sanity sapping."

Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff

I just received word from long-time Atlas Games writers Robin Laws (Feng Shui, Over the Edge) and Kenneth Hite (the Mini Mythos series) that they've just kicked off a new blog, called Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff. Robin says:

"After much preparation, a great leviathan lurches its head from the dark waters of podcasting. Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff, my new podcast with boon compadre Kenneth Hite, is now live, with a popping site festooned by the finest cartoon stylings of John Kovalic, whose Dork Tower is a Ken and Robin sponsor in perpetuity.

"Grab the inaugural episode to hear us discuss Night's Black Agents, English perambulations, the role of the GM in contemporary game design, and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn."

Murder of Crows Playmat

The new playmat for Murder of Crows is now available on our Retailer Support page (in the left column). Just put the PDF on a disk and take it to your local copy center to get it printed out and laminated, and you'll be all tricked out for your own games!

Jeff Menges Art Show

Long-time Ars Magica illustrator Jeff Menges tells us that he has two original Ars Magica pencil illustrations in an art show in Seattle. The show is called "The Art of Roleplaying Games" at Krab Jab Studio and features original art from over 22 fantasy artists spanning 30 years. The opening reception is August 11, from 6 to 9 pm ... if you're in the area, stop by for a look, or check out their Facebook page for more info!

Duck of Gloom

To cross-promote the Gloom character card that's featured in Steve Jackson Games' new Duck of Gloom plush, we now have nifty new banner ads up at the bottom of our front page and on the Gloom line page. Enjoy!

Murder of Crows (and reprints) in Stores This Week

Today our distributors all over the USA should be receiving their shipments of our newest card game, Murder of Crows, by Thomas Denmark and Eduardo Baraf.  That means the game should be showing up on the shelves of friendly local game stores -- perhaps even as early as today (if a store picks up items in person from a local distributor), but more likely in the next few days, depending on local conditions.  While you wait to get your copy, why not download the rules?

The same shipments include three card game reprints as well: Dungeoneer: Haunted Woods of Malthorin, Dungeoneer: Den of the Wererats and Cthulhu 500.

Gen Con Preview on BoardGameGeek

Atlas Games is featured in BoardGameGeek's Gen Con 2012 Preview. In particular, they mention Gloom (recently of Wil Wheaton's TableTop fame), our new card game Murder of Crows, and the Over the Edge 20th Anniversary limited edition ... all of which we'll be highlighting at our Gen Con booth. See you there!
