Back in the Twin Cities
No, they didn't forget to pack me up with the rest of the booth. I am back in the Atlas offices following a stellar and sublime GenCon. Being back amongst people who live in just one city was rather quaint, but in the best possible way. Indianapolis was a delight, and the trip was not at all difficult, all things considered. The highlight of GenCon is always the people that I get to meet, catch up with, be mistaken for, or walk past. This year was by far the biggest show on all those fronts.

Much to my delight, Gorilla Warfare appeared at the show in addition to Last Hero in Scandinavia. Gorilla Warfare, remember, is our all-new Feng Shui title. Even as it sits all shiny-new on my desk, I am preparing for the release of our next Feng Shui book: our reprint of the Guiding Hand sourcebook, Blood of the Valiant, featuring brand-new material by the esteemable Keith Baker. Beyond that, we've got books in the works for next year that I think will surprise and excite every Feng Shui fan.

How can I mention GenCon without also mentioning our EN World awards? I got to tread a stage in front of some of the finest talents in gaming in joint acceptance of the Ennie for Unknown Armies. Better still, I got to meet Chris Aylott (Last Hero in Scandinavia) right before he became famous as the author of this year's Best Rules Supplement, Dynasties & Demagogues. That was a trip. I'm honored to share space on the credits page of that book with you, Chris.

Did I mention that Keith Baker's Crime & Punishment, the next in our "Campaign Styles" series after Dynasties, is just finishing up the final proof-reading process this week? That means the book is not far from the printer and, then, not far from you. I'm quite anxious to see what you all think of it. Which reminds me: back to work!

Monkey Business

I'm busy packing orders for Gorilla Warfare, the Jammers sourcebook for Feng Shui. Everybody wants cybernetic simian freedom fighters from the future, yes?

Today I am sending out a bunch of orders to overseas distributors. Tomorrow we ship to all the US distributors, plus any non-US customers who didn't have their numbers in already. Watch your local game store...the book should be showing up on game store shelves in the next week or two!

Back from Gen Con
I was happy to make it down to Indianapolis for about 48 hours on a last-minute cybersaver fare, and get a chance to check out the new location, which is very snazzy indeed. It was great to see that attendance was up, and it looks to me like Indy will be home to many successful Gen Cons to come.

Beelzebub
Thank you to everyone who wished Michelle and I well for our sick dwarf rabbit, Beelzebub (despite the "devil bunny" name, we should note he always preferred carrots to ham). I had been staying home for most of Gen Con to care for him and administer his pain medication, as we had found out earlier this year that he had cancer and would not be with us for long. When I got back on Monday afternoon, I found that Beezle had passed away when I was in Indianapolis. While we deeply grieve the loss of our beloved pet, we are so thankful for the extra time we had to enjoy with him, say our goodbyes, and spoil him with treats and affection. We are also grateful for our many friends and colleagues who wished him well and offered us their sympathy.

En Route II Approved and Other Miscellany

Amidst the all the box-packing and heavy lifting yesterday (shipping out Last Hero), we also received the proofs for En Route II: By Land or By Sea from the printer. Scott and I, being the only people here, took time out from our other projects to give 'em a close look, and the book looks great! We signed off on them, so printing should be underway for the book to be completed and delivered to us sometime in mid-August or so.

Meanwhile, we're hard at work on Sanctuary of Ice (really!) and Crime and Punishment. Scott finished the maps for SOI today, which puts the ball back in my court on the final layout details and making corrections from proofreading. Also in my lap is Keith Baker's Crime and Punishment, a sort of sequel to Dynasties and Demagogues, demanding my proofreading attention. I'm especially eager to read C&P, since I was the one who outlined the concept for the book, and I had a lot of conversations with Michelle and Keith about it. (In fact, Michelle and I had a long meeting about it at Gen Con in Milwaukee last year.) I'm going to have to put in some hours this weekend, since next week will be busy again in the heavy lifting department, with the release of Gorilla Warfare...

Meanwhile, in Roseville...

We have books! The printer's truck dropped off Last Hero in Scandinavia and, as a bonus, Gorilla Warfare, which I actually wasn't expecting so soon, given the press problems. As it happens, only Last Hero is shipping out this week -- I had not pestered distributors for their numbers on Gorilla Warfare yet, and now many of them are off to Gen Con.

If you are going to be at the show in Indy, though, you'll be happy to know that our printer sent copies of both books directly to our crew there. They are due to arrive sometime Friday, though it may be too late in the day to make it out on sale until late afternoon or Saturday morning. Quantities are limited, too, so best to show up early if you want to snag a copy of one or both!

Sleeping at the Train Station

We're here in Indianapolis. Our hotel happens to be in a historic train station, with white fiberglass "ghost" statues throughout the place, train cars turned into guest rooms (but not ours), and elevated train structures in the main atrium. It's really spectacular.

That's not why we're here, though, is it? GenCon is a lot different this year, but it seems like it's going to be stellar. The exhibitor's hall is not only very large, it seems to have driven manufacturers to create even larger booths themselves. Everything is still being built up here, but it's a very exciting place to be. I hope we'll see a lot of Atlas fans at the show this weekend.

I have an experimental new Unknown Armies scenario that I'm looking to run at the show, so please come by the booth and sign up for that. It only accomodates four, so hurry! I'll run it more than once if I get the chance, though.

Likewise, I'll be handling some brief Feng Shui action sequences at the Atlas booth, and a complete, short adventure if enough people sign up. Can you detect a theme here? Come and sign up to play at the Atlas booth!

Finally, I'm making it my mission to get people playing Corruption, because it teaches vital poker skills. Come by the booth and play a single round of Corruption with me and I'll give you a complimentary "thank you."

Be sure to come by here and check in for GenCon updates. Now that I've got this interthingy working, I'll do my best to keep you all informed as to what's hot in the Indy City.

All Quiet on the Office Front

Will and Michelle joined the Adventure Retail caravan to Gen Con, which departed at about 7:30 this morning, leaving Scott and me to hold down the fort.

So far it's been a pretty boring day, but with no shortage of hard work -- I'm busy packing up the plastic RPG dividers that we and almost two dozen other publishers collaborated to produce. These will be shipping later this week (along with Last Hero in Scandinavia) to a number of distributors, who will then be shipping them along to retail stores throughout the English-speaking world. Boy, those little plastic things are heavy.

Speaking of Last Hero, it's still not here. It was actually expected more than a week ago, but our printer had a major press breakdown. Apparently we're not the only game company scratching their heads wondering if there will be some books to send by express courier to Gen Con before the end of the week.

Better news is that we got a big pile of blister packs from Lance and Laser, who have done some really excellent minis to go along with The Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary, as well as In the Belly of the Beast. Find the Lance & Laser booth at Gen Con to buy a whole bunch of them, if you get the chance this weekend -- who doesn't want to build an army of the froglike Amphi, now that you can?

Polyhedral Trip to Indianapolis

In the morning, it's off to Indiana City for the General's Convention, or something like that. One half of the office will be there, with one representative each from the equestrians and the plebes, from the taller half and the shorter half, and from the married half and the unmarried half. Be sure to come by the ginormous Adventure Retail, slash Steve Jackson, slash Atlas Games, slash Dork Storm Press booth to say "hello," join the Special Ops program, and comment on our swanky new maroon shirts. If there's any luck between the ten-thousand lakes and the cornfields, you may even get to pick up a fresh-from-the-presses copy of Last Hero in Scandinavia, the epic campaign that dares to take on hordes of d20 monsters using hex-maps and competitive roleplaying!

Also, keep your eyes on Nyambe: African Adventures at the show. We'll find out whether or not it wins the prestidigitatious Diana Jones award or a heartfelt ENnie. The competition this year is stiff as a drink, so we've got to keep our fingers crossed. Bring your crossed fingers to the Atlas booth and you might win a free copy of something that's free at the booth, but don't quote me on that.

We'll see you at the show!

Prepping For GenCon

Turns out the office is kind of creepy in the middle of the night. Of course, it might be Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" that's doing it. Whatever it is, it is creepy.

Wednesday Is Nyambe Celebration Day

The EN World Peer Award nominations have been announced now, too. This is Nyambe's second nomination just today. How's that for recognition? For more about the Peer Award, head on over to EN World.

We're in good company today.

Atlas Splits its Chances of Winning the Diana Jones Award!

The nominees for the prestigious Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming have been announced, and Atlas Games is pleased to receive two of the seven nominations for the award! Both Nyambe: African Adventures by Chris Dolunt and Unknown Armies 2nd Edition by Greg Stolze and John Tynes appear on the shortlist for the award, which will be presented at GenCon. The award's committee had the following nice things to say:

Nyambe: "Arguably the finest of the d20 System sourcebooks released last year, this book brought a mythic version of Africa directly to your fantasy roleplaying game, finally dragging it out of medieval Europe. In doing so, it highlighted the best part of the d20 System/Open Game License: the ability to bring fresh and original settings to a large audience."

Unknown Armies: "In its first edition, Unknown Armies relentless concentration on individual, personal responsibility and consequences, married to its inventive, original, and wholly American occult background, created an alchemical blend that energized personal horror gaming for the 21st century. The second edition is cleaner and sleeker than ever, making it even more accessible for players new to this gem."

En Route II: By Land or By Sea Appears

I swear, if you're not scrolling all the way down on the Atlas site to see the Pipeline, then you're missing out. Some folks didn't catch the debut of our cover for Gorilla Warfare when it first appeared there, and some people still haven't seen Scott Reeves' wonderful work on the face of Last Hero in Scandinavia. Right now, you're not looking at the colorful new cover Lee Moyer's given us for En Route II: By Land or By Sea, which has just been revealed on our site. Wait a minute, that last book title wasn't a link! That's because I want you to go and have a peek at the Pipeline. Get in the habit.

Dungeoneer Demos!

As many of you may have heard, Atlas Games has finalized an agreement to become the publisher of Thomas Denmark's popular Dungeoneer card game. The 2nd Edition of the game will be released in October, but we've decided to get a head start on demos. Effectively immediately, the Special Ops demo team is available to run Dungeoneer demos. Just fill out the demo request form at the bottom of the www.atlas-games.com/specialops web page to arrange an event at your game store or local convention!

Atlas Games to Publish Dungeoneer

We have some very exciting news today -- we've finalized a deal for Atlas Games to publish Dungeoneer, the very cool dungeon-delving card game designed by Thomas Denmark and heretofore published by the good folks at Citizen Games (who also make such cool things as the MasterScreen, which every roleplaying GM should own). Visit the new Dungeoneer web page to read the press release and see some of the new artwork in progress.

So, you've already read about Sacred Ground 2, Crime & Punishment, and Blood of the Valiant. Did you know that Blood of the Valiant marks the return of Infinite Kung-Fu's Kagan McLeod to the world of Feng Shui? I'm delighted to tell you that Kagan is now at work on a stellar new cover for us that promises to be the kung-fu-iest Feng Shui book cover to date. Plus, I'm putting together what promises to be a handsome collection of new art from both original, authentic sources and awesome, new talents that I think will make this edition of Blood of the Valiant a real prize. Plus, it's got stats for freaking Wong Fei Hong, so what more do you want?

Meanwhile, I've begun layout on Keith Baker's Crime and Punishment, which looks like it will wonderful as Dynasties & Demagogues, but in totally different ways. This book even contains the true story behind Keith Baker's winning idea for the Wizards of the Coast Setting Search. You don't want to miss that.

Finally, John has just come by my office to let me know that I am to proceed on the webpage supporting our big, secret announcement here at Atlas. Tune in tomorrow for that exciting news!

Shameless Plug: ENnies Voting Now Open

Free Ars Magica Update

I heard a cool bit of news from James at RPGNow -- as he discusses in a thread on ENWorld, Atlas Games has taken over the #1 spot as the source of referrals to RPGNow, squeezing past long-time leader ENWorld! As you might guess, the source of our newfound influence is primarily the free Ars Magica rulebook download. This has been simply an enormous success. At last count, the Ars Magica rulebook has been downloaded almost 9,500 times!

Sacred Ground 2
A D20 System Sourcebook of Holy Places

Unearth the divine secrets of the deities in these four sacred sanctuaries. Sacred Ground 2 presents 112 more pages of holy sites to use as PC home bases, as settings for your next adventure, or as lairs for your characters’ most powerful enemies. Each entry provides location maps and fortifications, NPC stats and backgrounds, and plot ideas to bring the site to life. This plug-and-play sourcebook includes:

  • Hai Shen Gong: A vibrantly colorful Middle Kingdom temple sits atop a wind-blasted cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the dark sea below. The head priestess personally attends to the fiery beacon that warns ships away from the dangerous shoals.
  • CrĂȘche Hospice: A small country estate houses an unfinished temple complex and the headquarters of the CrĂȘche Knights. The hospice is pilgrimage site, hospital, garrison, and inn all at once, but also a prison for an entity called the Blasphemer, which prophesies that other creatures like itself will soon rise to plunge the religions of the world into chaos.
  • The Oracle: This ancient mountain tower is kept by mystics dedicated to the Lady of Fate, and is home to the goddess’ oracle. At the request of supplicants, this young girl can plumb the depths of history and unravel the threads of destiny.

Those concerned with such things know the secret of the forest: it is a druidic grove with a powerful natural relic hidden in its heart.

    Current Atlas Promotions

We have a bunch of promotions coming out right about now, so I thought a wrap-up of them might be in order:

Gaming Herald, Origins Edition — Features a write-up on Crime & Punishment in their 3.5 product list; and an ad for the Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary

Gaming Frontiers #5 — In "The Wages of Sin" Keith Baker presents out-takes from Crime & Punishment, in particular six new feats called "character flaws;" Brannon Hollingsworth also gives you a look at "Into the Vortex," an out-take from En Route II.

Campaign #8 — Campaign's cover features the cover art from Sacred Ground by Steven Sanders; the magazine also includes the article "The Wind-Divers of Gabriel's Aerie" by Chris Jones, which provides rules that let your own character plunge off the edge of this flying island with an airframe strapped to his back.

Pyramid — Look for an out-take from the Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary by Darren Miguez called "The Whisperer;" and a banner ad for the Bestiary, as well. Soon after, "A Nyamban Herbal" by Chris Dolunt and Chris Jones explores the magic inherent in the plants of Nyambe, as an out-take from the upcoming magic items sourcebook Ancestral Vault.

Wizards — Rumor has it that Crime & Punishment will be featured in a flier listing new 3.5 releases, which will be distributed by Wizards of the Coast® at GenCon.

    Fading Suns in Dynasties

In a recent discussion on the OGF-d20-l mailing list, the topic came up of a couple of in-text attributions in our Dynasties and Demagogues book. We wanted to provide a clarifying note here.

The Information Network feat (p. 83) is based on the Gossip Network feat in Fading Suns D20 by Holistic Design, Inc., and the Reputation Broker feat (p. 84) is based on the Smear Campaign feat also in Fading Suns D20. Besides listing Fading Suns in the OGL's Copyright Notice (section 15) on page 2, author Chris Aylott also acknowledged these sources in the text of the book, so readers could know where the rules came from.

What we want to make clear to folks is that Fading Suns is a trademark of Holistic Design, and they have granted us permission to reference it in our text, outside of the mandatory copyright notice in the Open Game License itself. If you want to know more about where these cool rules came from, visit the Fading Suns D20 web page at http://www.holistic-design.com/FSd20/FSd20.html.

    Congratulations!

As proof of John's theory that we only ever get Origins Awards when we don't show up to accept them, he learned today that he'll be receiving the award for his contribution to Game Mastering Secrets by Grey Ghost Press. He wrote an article entitled "The Beginner's Game: How to Attract and Keep New RPG Players" that was included in the book, which first appeared in Dragon in 1995. Congratulations to Grey Ghost Press and all of the contributors to the book!
